Competitive speech activities allow students to learn about a wide range of different types of communication in a fun, high energy setting.  Students choose to compete in one of thirteen different categories that emphasize some specific aspect of rhetoric that could be serious or expressive.

Public Address (Serious) Interpretation (Expressive)
Original Oratory Extemporaneous Reading
Great Speeches Storytelling
Extemporaneous Speaking Creative Expression
Discussion Humorous
Informative Serious Interpretation of Prose
Serious Interpretation of Poetry

Although students are a member of the team, they compete individually against many other students from different schools in judged competition. This activity is a great way to help develop poise, confidence and public presence in addition to widening a student’s view of the world.
