Multiple Teams · Bissen Qualifies for State Alpine Meet

Giants Ridge, Biwabik, MN – Under nearly perfect race conditions, the Lions Alpine Ski Team competed in the MSHSL Section 7 race at Giants Ridge on Tuesday.  With a steady snow and falling temperatures, the race turned out to be a great day for the Lions.

Junior Sam Bissen led the team for the day with runs of 38.83 and 40.42 for a combined time of 1:19.25.  With this time, Bissen finished 10th in the individual tournament and qualified for the MSHSL State Race that will held on Wednesday, Feb. 15th at Giants Ridge.

This is the second year in a row that St. Croix Prep has qualified a racer for the State Meet.  Bissen will be following in the foot steps of Jacob Grubisch who finished 49th in last year’s State Meet.

For the Lion’s boys team, 8th grader Luca Hynnek posted the second fastest time with a 1:32.68 (49th overall), Senior Matt Bogel posted a 1:35.88 (60th overall) and 9th grader Liam White posted a 1:47.49 (81st overall) to round out the scoring for the Lions.  As a team, the boys team claimed 13th place out of the 18 team section race field.

For the girls, only three girls skied in the Section Race, they therefore did not qualify for team points.  But 8th grader Emma Nord posted a combined time of 1:43. 47 for 51st place, 8th grader Eva Benson posted a combined time of 1:44.74 for 55th place and 8th grader Avery Grubisch posted a combined time of 2:05.53 for 84th place.

Head Coach Thor Nelson lead the Lions through a very successful season this winter and is excited by the future of this team.  “We will only lose Matt from this year’s team.  And while he has played a significant role with this team and will be really missed, I am excited by the young talent on this team and am looking forward to a great season next year.  Sam qualifying for the State Meet is huge for us.  It helps show how strong a program we have here at SCPA and is something everyone on the team is proud of.”
