On a day when both teams would have preferred weather more like the Serengeti, the Liberty Lions defeated the St. Croix Prep Lions baseball team 9-4 in the season opener for both teams. After a falling behind 4-0, Prep pulled to within 4-2 through four innings. But Liberty was able to pull away with a three-run fifth and a two-run sixth inning before the game was called after six due to darkness.
Despite early season walks and errors, there were bright spots for the Lions. Starter Severin Hegstad settled in to strikeout seven over four innings. The offense, although held to three hits, had singles from Barrett Benson and Tony Pribnow come with runners in scoring position.
The Lions will look to even their record on Tuesday, April 9 with a road game against the New Life Academy Eagles.
