Friday night was Youth Night for St. Croix Prep baseball, as youth ballplayers and all members of the Prep community were invited to the boys varsity game. The crowd was the largest of the season for the Lions and the team did not disappoint.
Scoring in every inning, Prep took a convincing 13-0 win over the ASA Eagles. With the win, the Lions climb to 6-5 – after starting the season 0-4 – which marks the first time this season that Prep has brought its record above .500.
On the mound, Barrett Benson gave the Lions four shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight. Severin Hegstad struck out two in his one inning of work.
Offensively, Prep had fourteen hits over four innings of offense. The Lions had hits from nine different players, led by Carter Rogness (3 hits), Kosei Kiyomoto (2 hits) and Nolan Grubisch (3 RBI). In addition, junior Ben Silvernale drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single in the fourth.
Next week Prep will play five games, including two MCAA games at Barkers Alps – Tuesday against Lester Prairie and Thursday against West Lutheran. The Lions thank Friday night’s crowd for their support and hope to see more strong crowds as the days get warmer.
